On Wednesday, Sept. 30 I went to the Hotel Vancouver to cover Mayor Robertson's announcement to the Board of Trade of a new name for our fair city, "Vancouver - Green Capital". With all the natural wonders in abundance here and our love of healthy living, it's appropriate.
I had a busy day yesterday with the opening of the Canada Line from YVR to the Waterfront. Even did the chauffeuring of the Mayor and aides from airport to City hall in the Jeep! Here is a photo of Minister McNeil and Mayor Robertson cutting the ribbon at City Hall Station.
We went on a bike trip to Vancouver Island for a few days to mark a certain occasion. Bikes have their own air conditioning, but only when you're moving. Temperature was about 35 C. Clare took most of the shots from the back seat as I was giving her my take on that type of photo. Click on the pictures with sound on.
Went to a First Nations gathering in North Vancouver last weekend. I want to make some more images of the dancers sometime soon, in a more studied manner. Click on the link above to see more color shots.
We went to my buddy Rob's place up the coast for a little R and R and partying. Rob is a fishing guide and a guy with many talents and can pull a salmon out of a
gumboot if there is any. We went out for a couple of hours but no luck, so I assume there was not a single fish within 100 miles! There were however, lots of other fruits of the sea such as 9 inch crabs and 6 to a pound prawns. Mighty tasty! If you are looking for a fishing guide, Rob is the man and just let me know and I can hook you up. Also went up to the Skookumchuck where the kayakers surf the tidal bore ... neat sport! Then on to socializing late into the night at Ken and Jenny's house on the water.
Had a glorious shoot Friday of HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, although I must have sweated 5 litres in the 85+ F. heat. Actually I was probably cooler than most of the Honor guards because the uniforms they wear are pretty toasty. The occasion was the unveiling of a new masthead at Prospect Point. Here are some photos from the event. Click to enlarge.
I'm sorry to hear of Arthur Erickson's passing. I was lucky enough to have met the man a few times and to have done a little photography of one of his last commissions, appropriately called "The Erickson" situated on Vancouver's False Creek. The aerial shot is my attempt at showing how the still unfinished building would look where located.
A couple of weeks ago I was honored to photograph B.C.'s eminent artist Gordon and wife Marion Smith's intimate dinner reception at the Vancouver Art Gallery. I enjoyed touring the Gordon Smith exhibit with the guests and really enjoyed his latest works, just completed.
I'm an Architectural / Commercial Photographer and I love the subject.
Main interests are family, friends, motorcycles, esp. HD, traveling on bikes, skiing and PHOTOGRAPHY!
Skied in BC and on Whistler Mountain off and mostly on since the beginning in 1965. I have observed quite a few changes, met a few folks and had a lot of good times (and sad times) since then. Anyone who would like my take on the area is welcome to contact me at rkcg@uniserve.com
As I sat in traffic yesterday, going nowhere I thought of the tons of pollutants spewing from the exhausts of other cars in our own fair city of Vancouver. The city has already declared no idle zones around the area and that's a good thing. But the gridlock gives a much bigger additive to the pollution than the curb stops I would think. So why don't we extend Rush Hours from 9 am to 11 am or more. This may apply to main arterials and collectors and maybe even local routes depending on business input.
Also traffic light loop detectors and synchronicity in this day and age of technology must surely be reasonable to install and maintain efficiently. Any other cities out there that have addressed this simple issue?
